The Chennai Super Kings are the Indian Premier League’s second most successful team. CSK has won four IPL titles under the leadership of former Indian captain MS Dhoni. Meanwhile, Stephen Fleming, who has worked with CSK both as a player and as a coach, will be the head coach of Johannesburg Super Kings in the CSA T20 League, and he hopes to replicate CSK’s feats.
All six of the teams competing in the CSA T20 League, which will begin in South Africa in January 2023, are solely owned by IPL franchises. The tournament’s Johannesburg franchise will now be known as the Johannesburg Super Kings after Chennai Super Kings purchased it.
Stephen Fleming on CSK culture
Stephen Fleming, who is the coach of the Johannesburg Super Kings (JSK), wants his team to benefit from working with a setup and players that are similar to those of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the SA20.
The owner of both CSK and the SA20 team JSK is Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL), and after hiring Fleming as CSK coach, they also recruited Faf du Plessis, a former CSK player, to serve as their captain. Former New Zealand captain Fleming claimed that creating a “culture” more quickly can be accomplished by working with people who one feels at ease around in a familiar setting.
“When you get people that you feel really comfortable with, the environment and who you’re with, the culture develops a lot quicker,” Fleming said.
“And once you start to get that cohesion and those connections, the longer you can stay together or the more often you can get together, we think there’s an advantage in that,” he added.
Fleming also emphasized the enduring bonds that the CSK players have developed over time, stating that losing players hurts them. He continued by saying that friendships and cohesion among the support staff are important.
“The thread of CSK runs pretty deep. Thankfully, through an owner and an ownership that really understands cricket and gives us the opportunity to explore these leadership styles, we’re able to have a really good model that allows people to feel comfortable and be the best they can be, achieve as much as they can in their time with us,” he further added.
