The new-age upcoming spinner for India is Washington Sundar. He is young and supremely talented. His potential was realized when he played for India in the u-19 world cup in 2016 and was instrumental in the team reaching the finals. Over the years, he has worked hard to become an efficient batsman rather than simply contributing to the team’s cause as a left-handed off-spinner.
His talent has been duly recognized and awarded an IPL contract. He has been part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise since 2018 and has been a major contributor to their performances. With so many achievements at such a young age of 21 years, he has been able to make substantial wealth for himself. According to various reports, his net worth is pegged at $ 4.9 million which in Indian Rupees would be approximately 36.4 crores. He is a contracted player with the BCCI and also receives remuneration for his services from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association.

As part of the BCCI contracted players, he is in the C-grade contract. For this grade, a cricketer receives Indian Rupees One crore for the contracted year. His IPL contract for the year 2021 stood at INR 3.2 crores. His primary source of income is derived from playing cricket, majorly IPL.
Apart from these contracts, he also receives remuneration for playing individual games for India. Up until now, he has featured in 4 tests, 1 ODI, and 31 T20Is. The most remarkable performance would be in the fourth test of the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar series between India and Australia. That was his debut test and to put up a performance of that stature was truly astounding. When India was struggling at 186, Thakur and Sundar combined forces to play an excellent inning. He scored a solid 62 and also picked up the wicket of Steven Smith in the first innings. His contribution cannot be put to words and he was one of the most prominent architects in India’s test win as well as series win.
For every test that an Indian cricketer plays, he gets Indian Rupees 15 lacs. For One Day Internationals and T20 Internationals, he receives Indian Rupees 6 lacs and 3 lacs respectively. These are the match fees for the international men’s team of India. Post his incredible success in international cricket, Sundar started signing big brand deals. He signed deals with global sportswear brand Puma and also electronics firm Anker Innovation.

In their interaction with the media, Puma India Managing Director said “We all saw Washington perform under the most hostile situations (in Australia), where he showed real mettle and thrived under pressure. Instead of getting overwhelmed by the occasion, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands, backed himself with unwavering confidence. His journey is as real as it can get for every cricket fan to connect with. At the end of the day, his resilience and determination to be the best at what he does make him an icon among the youth.”
This shows that brands are recognizing his talent and potential. From what he has shown, it is certain that Sundar is made for bigger things. He is currently battling injury but once he returns he would be expected to take the stage by storm and establish himself as India’s premier spinner.
