The childhood coach of Tilak Varma, Salam Bayash, praised him for doing really well for Team India in the current five-game T20I series in West Indies. Bayash mentioned that Varma was meant to become a significant player due to the dedication and hard work he has shown in improving his skills.
Varma performed really well for Team India in the first two T20I matches. He scored 39 runs from 22 balls in his first match and then in the second game, he became the second youngest player to achieve a half-century for the Indian team in T20Is. In that match, he scored 51 runs from 41 balls, hitting one six and five boundaries.
Childhood coach on Tilak Varma

“He belongs to a very humble background. Main mehnat kraya, vo mehnat kiya (I asked him to put in the effort and he followed me). I’m very happy for him. Every coach wants to see his student playing for the country and my wish got fulfilled. I always believed that he is destined to be a big player and we just kept working hard towards this,” Salam Bayash said.
Tilak Varma got his first call to join the Indian team after his impressive performances in the Indian Premier League. He scored a total of 740 runs in 25 matches with a strike rate of 144.53, scoring three scores of fifty runs or more in the last two IPL seasons.
Bayash also mentioned that Varma’s dad, who had a job as an electrician, helped and stood by him during his initial years.
“From morning 6 to evening 6, he used to be in the academy. He used to fall asleep while sitting behind me and I used to be afraid that he might fall while sleeping because he used to get that tired. So, I asked his parents to make a shift nearby to the academy. Tilak’s job was only to focus on cricket and his zeal and passion made me concentrate more on developing his skills,” he added.
Salam Bayash also shared that Tilak Varma was able to make a wish come true after over ten years – he finally got to meet the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who acts as the mentor for MI in the Indian Premier League.
“Sachin sir likes him very much. I will tell you another instance. Tilak told him that my teacher is a very big fan of yours. So, Sachin Sir replied, ‘I know everything about you and your coach’. Last year, when Sachin sir came to Hyderabad, I got to meet him and that was a big, big moment for me,” he said.
