Dinesh Karthik expressed his displeasure with India’s poor fielding after their defeat against Bangladesh.
While KL Rahul dropped an easy catch of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who was then batting on 15, Washington Sundar appeared to make no effort off the next delivery to capitalize on a catching opportunity that could have been decisive in the game.
Dinesh Karthik criticizes Team India’s fielding

Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mustafizur Rahman led Bangladesh to a stunning victory in the opening ODI of the series on Sunday at Mirpur, handing India a one-wicket defeat. A remarkable victory for the hosts allowed them to survive not one, but two lucky escapes due to fielding mistakes at the tail end of the chase as Bangladesh lost the plot in the middle overs as the Indian bowling attack helped the visitors recover. Senior Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik criticized Team India’s fielding performance in the first ODI loss.
Both occurred within the span of two successive deliveries in Bangladesh’s 43rd over of the chase. Mehidy top-edged Shardul Thakur’s delivery while searching for a slog. KL Rahul, the wicketkeeper, ran to grab the catch but missed it. The sliced shot from the very next ball, which had the same line, length, and execution, flew high into the air in the direction of the third man. Washington Sundar, who was stationed there, saw the ball fall in front of him as he walked over to pick it up but made no attempt to take the catch. Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, was enraged by the two fielding attempts.

Dinesh Karthik was surprised by the fielding efforts made by India. India would have triumphed if Rahul or Sundar had taken that catch.
“Obviously KL Rahul’s drop towards the end and Sundar not coming, don’t know why he didn’t come in. I don’t know if it was because of the lights, which I wouldn’t know, but if he had seen the ball, he should have gone for it. That’s only a question he can answer. Overall fielding effort was 50-50. Not the best day, but not the worst day either. I guess in the end, with the pressure, we left some boundaries as well,” he said.
