Team India won the first T20I at the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram by eight wickets to get off to a good start in their three-match T20I series against South Africa.
Deepak Chahar and Arshdeep Singh’s outstanding bowling effort, which reduced the Proteas to 9/5 in the first three overs, allowed India to restrict South Africa to 106 for 8 in 20 overs. India also suffered from the unpredictable surface and managed just 17 runs in the powerplay, which is their lowest total in the first six overs in a T20I ever. In 6.1 overs, India lost Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two critical wickets.
Suryakumar Yadav, meanwhile, led the charge at the time, continuing his excellent form with his second half-century in a row, scoring 50 runs from 33 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes. KL Rahul also scored fifty runs from 56 balls, but he played a supporting role.
Even though the pitch was challenging to bat on, Suryakumar Yadav’s aggressive strategy received high accolades from KL Rahul following the game.
“This was hard work. Was unbelievable for Surya to come out and play the shots. We saw how the ball was flying and for Surya to come out with that approach was phenomenal. After the first ball, he wanted to be aggressive and take on the bowler. He said he wanted to play his shots and gets some runs. That helped me to take my time and play one end,” KL Rahul said.
Rahul added that because they had practiced on the challenging field, they were ready for a low-scoring game.
“We did practice here yesterday, and there was a humbling experience as well. So we came in prepared for a scrap. It was not an easy wicket. I wanted to be challenged and wanted to do the job for the team,” Rahul added.
