Rahul Tewatia is distraught after being ignored by national selectors. For the upcoming series against Ireland, the highly regarded allrounder was left out of Team India’s new-look T20I squad.
The regular members of India’s Test squad are expected to fly to England immediately to prepare for the postponed fifth Test at Edgbaston next month, so the selectors are expected to name a new-look side for the series. After demonstrating his abilities in the IPL 2022, Tewatia must have been optimistic about his chances of making the team.

The selectors named a 17-member squad for the upcoming two-match T20I series in Ireland, and there were few surprises among the squad, with most of the familiar names making the cut. As expected, Hardik Pandya was named captain, with Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer joining the Test squad for the England tour, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar named as his deputy.
Rahul Tripathi received his first call-up to the Indian team following his outstanding performances for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2022, but Rahul Tewatia was left out. The Gujarat Titans all-rounder appeared in 16 games for his team, scoring 217 runs at an average of 31 and a strike rate of 147.62, and he had several game-winning innings.

It wasn’t about the number of runs he scored; it was about the impact he made, and he certainly impressed many experts by finishing off innings on multiple occasions. However, with India’s two strong finishers in Pandya and Dinesh Karthik, it was always going to be difficult for the selectors to find another finisher, though Tewatia deserved to be included.
“Expectations hurt,” Tewatia tweeted, expressing his disappointment at being passed over for the Ireland series.

Tewatia had already been called up to the Indian team after his IPL stint with the Rajasthan Royals in 2020, but he was unable to make the squad due to fitness issues. Tewatia, who has a calm demeanor and a cool head, would be an ideal candidate for a T20 side because he can contribute with the overs if needed and is a safe fielder inside the circle.
