Players are contracted by teams in the IPL auction to represent and play for them. Whichever team bids the highest amount for the player gets the player. Players who have been part of the franchise for a long time and have performed for them can be retained in the auctions. If the player has not been retained, sometimes the franchise goes out of the way to break the bank and buy them back.
However, shockingly, RCB did not retain or bid for its star spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal in the 2022 auctions. Fans and analysts were left shocked at this strategy. The team spent a hefty INR 10.75 crores price tag for Wanindu Hasaranga but did not go for Chahal.
One team’s loss is another team’s gain as Rajasthan was lightning fast to secure the services of Yuzvendra Chahal for a meager INR 6.50 crores.Ā His performance for the franchise over the two games has been spectacular and he has proven why he is rated as one of the best white-ball cricketers.
Yuzvendra Chahal takes on RCB
Fans were eagerly waiting to see what happens when Chahal goes up against his former team in the IPL. The match was billed to the highest expectations and it did live up. RCB, batting second, had got a quick start and had clocked 60 runs in 8 overs. Chahal came to bowl the 9th over with David Willey and Virat Kohli at the crease. In the 4th ball off the over, Willey nudged the ball towards the forward short leg and Kohli left for a run. Willey was in two minds. Samson was extremely fast to cover the ground and released the throw towards the non-striker’s end in an off-balance position. Kohli turned back towards his crease but by then Chahal had collected the ball and cleaned up the bails.
It was an unbelievable piece of effort from Samson and Chahal. In the very next ball, Chahal bowled a googly to clean bowl Willey for a duck. Chahal finished his quota of 4 overs with 15 runs 2 wickets and a run-out.
Fans went bonkers on Twitter seeing his performance against RCB and memes started to flow in quickly. Fans reminded RCB of their mistake of not picking Chahal and how Rajasthan was lucky to get a bowler of his caliber.
