With the IPL flowing full steam, every team is looking to maximize their momentum and win as many games as possible. It’s not just important to win games but to win them with good run rates. Therefore, teams are forced to plan their middle-over hitting accordingly.
In today’s match, Delhi Capitals had a similar conundrum as they were forced to take a call between Lalit Yadav and Rovman Powell in the middle overs. The team management decided to send Powell after Warner was sent cheaply but Powell could not negotiate the combined bowling of Bishnoi, Krunal Pandya, and Krishnappa Gowtham.
Ravi Bishnoi gets the better of Powell
Ravi Bishnoi was asked to come in the middle overs to come and choke the run flow and pick wickets. He did as was told to him and was incredible in his execution. His final figures were 4 overs for 22 runs and 2 wickets. One of those wickets was of the big-hitting Powell.
It was the 11th over and Delhi needed a push-on. However, Powell was batting at 3 runs off 9 balls. He found it difficult to read Bishnoi and was unable to time the ball at all. In the third ball of the over, knowing that he had to go for the biggie, Powell went down on his knee and tried to heave a big slog sweep in the hope of clearing the boundary. However, he completely misread the line and length and missed the ball. The ball went on to completely clean up his woodwork.
Reaction to Bishnoi’s genius
Powell looked dismayed by the way he was done by Bishnoi and his face showed frustration. He was disappointed with his batting performance. Delhi Capital fans also seemed disappointed by the management’s decision to promote Powell to no. 3 when his limitations against spin are well known. Many said that it would have been better had Lalit Yadav or Sarfaraz Khan had come up with the order.

Delhi got the only finisher in Powell. Can't rely always on Lalit. But but send him at 3 against Krunal, Bishnoi and Gowtham on a tricky wicket. Very good.

Whatever the plan was to put Powell against Bishnoi, wasn't a good one.

Why fed Powell to Bishnoi? Any logic in this?

Why would you send Rovman Powell in the middle overs ahead of Sarfaraz Khan when Bishnoi, Gowtham, and Krunal are bowling?
