Rohit Sharma has been one of the pillars of India’s white-ball team. The Indian ODI and T20 teams have gone through a visible metamorphosis since 2013 and their playing attitude has changed. A major contributor to that has been Sharma. Dhawan and him as openers have given India flying starts and on the basis of which the middle order has gone and scored big runs. His fluent timing and penchant to score daddy hundreds have made him indispensable for the team.
Over the years, he has recorded a multitude of records. We look at 5 such records that seem impossible to break at the moment.
Double Centuries
Sharma was the third Indian to score an ODI double ton after Sachin and Sehwag. However, unlike the other two, he did not just stop after scoring one. He went on to score three ODI double tons. He has scored one against Australia in 2013 and two against Sri Lanka in 2014 and 2017. It is unlikely for any modern-day batsman to notch up three ODI double tons.
Highest ODI Score
As mentioned above, Sharma brought his second double-century against Sri Lanka in 2014. It was not an ordinary double century since Sharma ended scoring a mammoth 264 in Eden Gardens. His innings consisted of 33 fours and 9 massive sixes. It is unthinkable for any cricket to score an ODI double ton, let alone cross 264.
Centuries in a World Cup
Sharma gave us an exhibition of stroke-making in the 2019 ICC World Cup. He displayed his ungodly talent when he notched 5 centuries in the World Cup. It remains a record for a player for the maximum number of centuries in a world cup. Sharma brought up a ton against South Africa, Bangladesh, Pakistan, England, and Sri Lanka. This record seems impossible to be broken. Sharma was in his most purple patch when getting him out seemed like a herculean task.
Most runs through boundaries
Sharma’s 264 against Sri Lanka was not just a record for the highest score in ODIs. It was also a record for the most number of runs scored in an innings through boundaries. Sharma scored 33 fours and 9 sixes in that innings. Thus, he scored 186 runs just through boundaries. It is unlikely for any batsman in the future to bat this long and score these many boundaries in one match.
Hit a six to score a century in every format
There have been many players to bring their centuries with a shot out of the park. Gambhir and Sachin have done that for India on various occasions in tests. However, Sharma is the only player to score a century by hitting a six in every format. He has done this in ODIs, Tests, and T20s. Very few players play all formats nowadays and even fewer score centuries in all formats. Thus, this record of Sharma seems impossible to breach.
