Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni joined the Indian cricket squad as a mentor ahead of the T20 World Cup in the UAE. Dhoni was given the new position before the Board of Control for Cricket in India released the Indian selection for the T20 World Cup.
Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket in August 2020, having last played for India in the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Manchester.
1. He can be a good influence on players
Despite being a celebrity in every way, Dhoni remains personable and down to earth. As a result, players may readily contact him when they encounter various problems throughout games. In the IPL, we’ve witnessed Dhoni impart knowledge to the next generation of players, whether from his own club or opponents. His simple presence in the locker room may have a calming effect on the cricketers.
2. Dhoni knows how to win
This is one of the most apparent reasons why Dhoni was chosen as a T20 World Cup mentor. When it comes to ICC titles, he is the most successful Indian captain. He understands what has to be done in circumstances where there is severe pressure or the chips are down, both as a player and as a leader. Even in tests, the pressure to win is very high these days with the World Test Championship in play. Dhoni can help instill a winning mentality into the team.
3. He can be a good helping hand to Kohli
Despite his stellar playing record, Indian skipper Virat Kohli has struggled in ICC knockout games. In the 2015 and 2019 World Cup semi-finals, as well as the 2017 Champions Trophy final, he felt the pressure. His captaincy was mediocre even in the WTC final. His dismissals were plainly made in a panicked manner. Having his previous captain, under whom he thrived, in the dressing room may be a blessing in disguise for Kohli.
4. Dravid and Dhoni could form a combo
Dravid and Dhoni are both calm and composed characters. Both are very tactical on the field and never let the pressure get to them. Having a similar minded individual will be a great help to newly appointed Team India coach Rahul Dravid. The Dravid and Dhoni combo could work wonders for the team.
5. He has a vast wealth of experience
Few Indian players have as much test cricket experience as Dhoni. Dhoni has faced countless high-pressure situations as a player and captain throughout his remarkable career and has come out on top the majority of times. He will have a wealth of knowledge to pass on to the next generation.
