The Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia is a T20 tournament modeled after the Indian Premier League (IPL). There have been players who have done very well in the Big Bash but have failed miserably or have not been given many chances in the IPL, particularly in their early years or seasons. Only four overseas players are allowed to play for a team in the IPL, which adds to the tournament’s rivalry between teams and occasionally within them.
The Indian Premier League is the most difficult and competitive T20 tournament in the world. The young players do their hardest in order to establish a reputation for themselves. Aside from that, veteran players aim to re-enter the circuit by putting up strong performances in this lucrative competition. It is now quite tough for a player to establish himself in this competition.
In this article, we look at the popular 5 players of Big Bash who failed in IPL:
1. D’Arcy Short
Short shone with the bat in the BBL 2018, collecting runs in nearly every game. In 15 appearances for the Hobart Hurricanes, he scored 637 runs. In that season, he had a strike rate of 140.62 and six half-centuries for his club. He was signed by the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals for a staggering Rs. 4 crores after his outstanding performance in the BBL. In the IPL 2018, however, he was a complete failure. He only played seven games and scored 115 runs with a strike rate of 116.16, causing the Royals to reshuffle their opening lineup. Since then, he hasn’t played in the IPL.

2. Josh Philippe
RCB selected Josh Philippe, who was routinely involved in the playing eleven throughout the early stages of the competition. Philippe and Aaron Finch started the batting, but neither of them got off to a good start. The middle-order batsmen were under increasing strain as a result of the opening failure. Philippe only scored 78 runs with a strike rate of 101.29 last season. As a result, he was dropped and was unable to return. Therefore, the management made the decision to release him ahead of the IPL auction in 2021. In the BBL, he had a quick turnaround for the Sydney Sixers. He was a member of the champion squad, which went on to win the final against Perth.
3. Adam Zampa
For RCB, Adam Zampa did not have much of an influence. Last season, the team made it to the playoffs but was eliminated by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The squad has been known for a long time to be excessively reliant on Virat Kohli and ABD. As a result, the team brought in Adam Zampa to lighten their load. The management brought in the leg-spinner as a backup for Chahal, but he failed to make an impression, taking only two wickets at an economy rate of 8.36. In the BBL, though, Zampa had the best bowling statistic of 5-17, taking 19 wickets in 12 matches at a great economy rate of 7.35.
4. Tom Banton
During the IPL 2020 auction, England’s teenage batting star Tom Banton was one of the most sought-after overseas players. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) paid 1 crore for the right-hander in the auction. Given his ability to attack bowlers from the start, the Englishman was anticipated to be the team’s regular opener. The KKR management, on the other hand, had a different opinion, which is why the batsman didn’t have the opportunity he deserved to show off his skills. In the BBL, though, he has had a lot of success.
5. Alex Carey
Alex Carey played for the Delhi Capitals past season. With a solid batting lineup, there was little room for Carey to create a name for himself in the Indian Premier League’s thirteenth season. Carey was given a shot in the starting eleven due to Rishabh Pant’s injury. Carey scored 32 runs off 29 balls in his one season on the field. Before the 2021 auctions, he was released from the squad. In the BBL 10, the Australian wicketkeeper scored 425 runs in 13 innings. This calmness at the crease is reflected in his strike rate of 122.13.
